Description of Services
The aim of Palomino Equestrian Therapy Services is to provide equestrian therapy services which are both person centered and inclusive to the disabled and non-disabled community. The target population includes, but is not limited to, adults and children with developmental disabilities, high risk youth and community members seeking a better understanding of basic riding skills. Services will be provided based on the individual’s level of comfort ability and will range from basic grooming to basic riding as therapy.
Equestrian Therapy is horseback riding for the disabled. By combining equestrian techniques with concepts of physical therapy, we create therapeutic riding for the non disabled as well as for mentally, physically and emotionally disabled individuals. Rather than the routine of other therapies, equestrian therapy is practiced in an atmosphere of fun and sport. The rider learns traditional horsemanship skills to control the horse, thus increasing his or her self-esteem as well as improving their physical abilities.
The opportunity to lead a horse, to groom and help saddle it, are very real sources of excitement and accomplishment. The natural affinity between people and horses is a powerful way of encouraging the individuals to achieve their full potential. Almost every therapeutic riding is a benefit to almost every disabled and non-disabled person. In less than fifteen minutes a walking horse takes a thousand steps. Each one requires the rider to use their muscles to maintain balance and their mind to control the horse
Major improvements among the disabled have been observed with cerebral palsied, mentally retarded, autistic, emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, stroke and accident victims. Riding builds muscle strength, balance and coordination; it increases joint mobility and perceptual skills for all the riders. Equestrian Therapy challenges students in a way they have seldom been challenged before.
Equestrian Therapy offers a person an excellent means of physical activity that aids in improving balance, posture, coordination, and most importantly, the development of a positive attitude and sense of accomplishment. In addition, students learn animal care, grooming and equipment use, which further encourages responsibility and participation.
